Nelson Goerner, the pianist on this recording, was born in San Pedro, Argentina, in 1969 and won first prizes at the Franz Liszt Competition in Buenos Aires (1986) and the Geneva Competition (1990).
Composition History
Schumann's Davidsbündlertänze was begun shortly after his engagement to Clara Wieck, his piano teacher's daughter and a child prodigy, and contains "many thoughts of marriage."

Adolf Schulz-Evler, the composer of Arabesques on 'The Beautiful Blue Danube', studied with Liszt-pupil Karl Tausig in Berlin and is primarily known for this single work despite composing 52 others.
Compositional Technique
In Davidsbündlertänze, Schumann used two pseudonyms, Florestan and Eusebius, to represent opposing artistic characters: Florestan for extroversion and impatience, and Eusebius for introspection and melancholy.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Robert Schumann, the composer of Davidsbündlertänze, created an imaginary 'Allied League of David' (Davidsbündler) to battle against what he considered flowery, traditionalist, or pedantic musicians.
