Howard Hanson was awarded the first American Prix de Rome in 1921, and during his three years in Italy, he studied with Italian composer Ottorino Respighi, who greatly influenced his orchestration techniques.

The Reuter Organ Company, which built the organ used in this recording, was established in 1917 and has installed over 2200 new organs worldwide.
