Composer's Artistic Vision

John Harbison's Piano Trio No. 2 makes little contact with the central trio repertoire from Mozart to Shostakovich, but instead draws inspiration from the transparency and ambiguity of Joseph Haydn's trios.

Composer Biography

John Harbison, born in New Jersey in 1938, has received numerous awards including the MacArthur Foundation's 'genius' award and the Pulitzer Prize.

Composition History

The Violist's Notebooks were inspired by Bartolomeo Campagnoli, an Italian violinist and composer from 1751-1827, known for his inventive viola etudes.

Performer Biography

The Amelia Piano Trio, featured on this album, was mentored by Isaac Stern, who presented them in their Carnegie Hall début.

Instruments

Violist Steven Tenenbom, who performs on this album, plays a viola made by Gasparo da Salò in 1560.

Composition History

The Gatsby Etudes were created as a measure of gratitude for pianist Judith Gordon, who made a tape of the entire vocal score for Harbison's opera The Great Gatsby.
