Harsányi admired the ethnomusicological research of his teacher Zoltán Kodály and Bartók, but considered his own music part of the aesthetic tradition of Brahms and Reger, rather than folk-inspired nationalism.

Despite fighting for France as a foreign volunteer and being assimilated into French culture, Tibor Harsányi was denied naturalization until the day after his death, due to an official's note calling his profession 'socially useless'.
