Johann Peter Emilius Hartmann (1805-1900) was born in the same year as Hans Christian Andersen and his long life spanned the careers of Mendelssohn, Schumann, Chopin, Liszt, Brahms, and Wagner.
Compositional Technique
Emil Hartmann's overture to Ibsen's "Hærmændene på Helgeland" (1878) is considered his orchestral masterpiece, showing a Danish composer approaching Tchaikovsky's orchestral style for the first time.
Composer Biography
Emil Hartmann (1836-1898) was more esteemed as a composer in Germany, where he also conducted, than in Denmark, where he was overshadowed by his father, J.P.E. Hartmann.

Composer's Artistic Vision
J.P.E. Hartmann developed an "Old Nordic" tone, characteristic of many of his later works, after being commissioned to write music for Oehlenschläger's poem "The Golden Horns" in 1832.
Historical Context
The Hartmann family is one of Denmark's great musical families, with a lineage stretching from Johann Ernst Hartmann (1726-1793) to Niels Viggo Bentzon (b. 1919).
