Compositional Technique

Jonathan Harvey, the composer, studied privately with Erwin Stein and Hans Keller on the advice of Benjamin Britten.

Compositional Technique

In Body Mandala, Jonathan Harvey uses Western instruments to mimic Eastern sounds by requiring brass to use 'lip vibrato', woodwinds to alternate fingerings for pitch variations, and strings to use 'circular bowing'.

Jonathan Harvey often uses puns or wordplay in his work titles, such as Inquest of Love and Death of Light/Light of Death, to hint at double meanings explored within the pieces.
