The image of Joseph Haydn has undergone enormous swings over the last 250 years, from his successes in England to his declining fortunes in the 19th century, and a reappraisal in the 20th century that faded the image of 'Papa Haydn'.
Recording & Production
This recording was made in a series of overnight sessions in late 2020, with no engineer or producer present, using a single pair of suspended omni-directional microphones.

This album includes 39 authenticated multi-movement solo keyboard works by Joseph Haydn from 1765 onwards, and nine earlier works that are widely presumed to be his.

Daniel-Ben Pienaar, the performer, is known for his individual interpretations of German piano classics and for playing an extensive repertoire of pre-Bach works on the piano.

Four of the early sonatas on this album are listed in Joseph Haydn's own Entwurf-Katalog, a draft catalogue from 1765 intended as an unambiguous list of his works.
