Haydn wrote these baryton trios for Prince Nicolaus Esterházy to play the baryton, with Haydn himself playing the viola, and a court musician on cello.
Instruments
The baryton is a bowed string instrument, a cross between a viola da gamba and a lirone, with six or seven bowed strings and sympathetic metal strings that can be plucked.

The baryton, though having a limited earlier history, enjoyed a final renaissance thanks to Haydn and his patron, Prince Nicolaus Esterházy.
Composition History
Haydn's extensive baryton compositions were stimulated by a complaint from Kapellmeister Gregor Werner in 1765, which led Prince Nicolaus Esterházy to urge Haydn to compose more for the baryton.
Composer Biography
Franz Joseph Haydn, born in 1732, began his career as Vice-Kapellmeister to Prince Paul Anton Esterházy in 1761, eventually becoming Kapellmeister.

The Valencia Baryton Project comprises musicians from the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía opera house in Valencia and the Opéra Orchestre National Montpellier.
