Joseph Haydn, born in 1732, received his musical training as a chorister at St Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna.

Composition History

Haydn received a commission for these concertos from King Ferdinand IV of Naples, whose wife was a daughter of Empress Maria Theresia, in 1785 or 1786.

Interpretation

The lira organizzata parts in this recording are transferred to recorders or transverse flutes, aptly reflecting the probable sound of the original instruments.

Performer Biography

Benoît Fromanger, a flutist born in Paris, has won distinctions for his recordings, including the Grand Prix de l'Académie du Disque Français and the Diapason d'or.
