Haydn's Concerto in C major, Hob.VIIa:1, was likely written for Luigi Tomasini, a violinist who served Prince Paul Esterházy and later became Konzertmeister.
Performer Biography
Augustin Hadelich, the violinist on this recording, won the gold medal at the 2006 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis and plays on the 1683 ex-Gingold Stradivari violin.
Interpretation
The Cologne Chamber Orchestra, founded in 1923, has performed on modern instruments according to historical performance-practice principles since 1987.
Composer Biography
Joseph Haydn, the composer of these violin concertos, began his career as Kapellmeister for Count von Morzin in 1759, before joining the Esterházy family in 1761.

The cadenzas for all three concertos on this album were composed by the soloist, Augustin Hadelich.
Composition History
Of the nine violin concertos once attributed to Haydn, only three authentic ones survive today, all dating from his early years with the Esterházy family.
