Composition History

The Duos by Michael Haydn, Joseph Haydn's younger brother, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart were created when Michael Haydn fell ill and Mozart completed the commission for the Archbishop of Salzburg.

Instruments

Karl Stamitz, a composer and virtuoso, wrote his 'Marlborough-Sonata' for the rare Viola d'amore, an instrument he played himself.

Valerie Rubin, the violinist on this album, studied at the Juilliard School of Music and the Mozarteum Salzburg and has performed as a soloist, chamber musician, and concertmaster across Europe.

Performer Biography

Martin Timphus, the violist on this album, was a founding member of the European Community Youth Orchestra and played under legendary conductors like Claudio Abbado, Herbert von Karajan, and Sir Georg Solti.

Instruments

The violin used on this recording was made by Carlo Ferdinando Landolfi in Milan in 1763, while the viola d'amore was made by F. M. Sämann in Dresden in 1962.
