Haydn made two visits to London at the invitation of violinist-impresario Salomon after Prince Nikolaus Esterházy's death in 1790, where he already had a considerable reputation.
Performer Biography
Jenő Jandó, the Hungarian pianist on this recording, has won several piano competitions and has recorded all of Mozart's piano concertos and sonatas for Naxos.
Historical Context
Much of Haydn's service to the Esterházys took place at the new palace of Esterháza on the Hungarian plains, a complex designed to rival Versailles.
Composer Biography
Joseph Haydn, the composer, was the son of a wheelwright and received his musical training as a chorister at St Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna.
Instruments
Haydn composed chamber music, particularly for his patron Prince Nikolaus Esterházy's favorite instrument, the baryton, a bowed string instrument with sympathetic strings.

Haydn served as Kapellmeister for the Esterházy family, one of the richest in the Empire, for many years, initially as Vice-Kapellmeister.
Performer Biography
Zsuzsa Kollár, who performs on the piano duet, was a pupil of Jenő Jandó at the Liszt Academy and has won several international piano competitions.
