Composer Biography

Joseph Haydn, born in 1732, began his career as Kapellmeister to Count von Morzin in 1759, followed by a long tenure with the Esterhazy family.

Composition History

Haydn's Symphony No. 53, "L'Impériale," was composed between 1778 and 1780, during a period when his works were widely known and enthusiastically received across Europe.

Recording & Production

This album was recorded at the Reformed Church in Budapest from February 8th to 11th, 1993.

Performer Biography

Bela Drahos, the conductor of the Nicolaus Esterhazy Sinfonia, is a flautist who won first prize in the Concertino Praga '71 International Flute Competition.
