Symphony No. 89 was taken to Paris by the Esterhazy violinist Johann Tost, charged by Haydn with its sale, along with another symphony.

Haydn played a major part in the development of the classical symphony, from his first symphony before 1759 to his final series written for London in 1794 and 1795.

Haydn spent many years as Kapellmeister to the Esterhazy family, one of the richest in the Empire, remaining in their employment for most of his life.
Compositional Technique
Two movements of Symphony No. 89, the slow movement and the last movement, were borrowed from one of Haydn's concertos for the lira organizzata, written for the King of Naples.
Performer Biography
Bela Drahos, the conductor of the Nicolaus Esterhazy Sinfonia, was born in 1955 and has won several international flute competitions and awards, including the Hungarian Liszt Prize.
Composition History
Haydn's Symphony No. 69, "Laudon," was dedicated to General Laudon, a celebrated hero in wars against Turkey, to attract buyers for the published arrangement.
