Composer Biography
Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, the composer, has lived and worked for most of his life in Katowice, Poland, but also found refuge and inspiration in the rugged countryside of Podhale.
Composition History
Górecki completed his Third Quartet in January 1995 but delayed its release for over ten years, finally delivering the score in 2005.
Compositional Technique
Górecki's Third Quartet features his 'lullaby' idiom with slowly rocking melodic ideas and accompanying harmonies, a familiar trait from his earlier works.
Compositional Technique
Górecki's Third Quartet includes a direct quotation from the first movement of Karol Szymanowski's First Quartet, albeit with a different tempo and expressive shading.
Composer's Artistic Vision
The title of Górecki's Third Quartet, '...songs are sung', was inspired by the last line of a poem by Russian writer Velimir Khlebnikov, but is not a musical interpretation of the poem.
Performer Biography
The Kronos Quartet, a string quartet, commissioned and premiered Górecki's first two quartets and also commissioned this Third Quartet.
