Krzysztof Herdzin, the composer, is a classically educated pianist from a musical family, with both parents being opera singers.

Compositional Technique

In the Double Concerto, Krzysztof Herdzin carefully balanced the orchestra's dynamics and instrumentation (20 strings, double woodwinds, two horns, harp, percussion) to allow the viola, a quieter instrument, to be heard clearly.

Performer Biography

Paweł Gusnar, the saxophonist, is a professor at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw and the Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Academy of Music in Łódź, and was elected Vice-Rector for Foreign Affairs of the FCUM in 2016.

Composition History

Krzysztof Herdzin's Double Concerto for viola, alto saxophone, and orchestra is noted as the first work of its kind in world literature, combining these two instruments with an orchestra.

Performer Biography

Katarzyna Budnik, the violist on this album, is an Assistant Professor of viola at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw and has won numerous international competitions, including a third prize at the prestigious ARD Music Competition in Munich.
