While in Italy, Hérold actively associated with prominent opera composers like Paisiello, Guglielmi, and Zingarelli, and his first opera was staged in Naples in 1815.

Hérold won the prestigious Prix de Rome from the Conservatory in 1812, the same year Napoleon began his Russian Campaign.
Composition History
Hérold composed his two symphonies in 1813 and 1814 while in Rome, sending them to Paris as part of the 'Envois de Rome' requirement for Prix de Rome winners.

The composer Berlioz disparagingly described Hérold's Zampa overture as 'four or five motives borrowed and stuck one after the other…without any real link'.
