Johann Wilhelm Hertel, a composer of the late Baroque and early Classical eras, was a talented harpsichordist and violinist who studied with Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Franz Benda.
Performer Biography
Katarzyna Pilipiuk, the baroque oboist and director on this album, performs 18th- and 19th-century music on copies of historical instruments and also experiments with contemporary music on early instruments.
Recording & Production
This album was recorded in March 2023 at the Cistercian Abbey in Mogiła, Kraków, Poland.
Composition History
The oboe concertos by Johann Wilhelm Hertel are preserved in autograph manuscripts at the Library of the Royal Conservatories Brussels.
Compositional Technique
Some of Johann Wilhelm Hertel's oboe concertos, particularly the G minor Concerto No. 5, show stylistic inspiration from the works of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and are excellent examples of the Empfindsamer Stil.
Instruments
The baroque oboe used on this recording is a copy of an instrument by Jonathan Bradbury (c. 1720), made by Randall Cook in 2019.
