Before 1925, recordings were made acoustically, with sound channeled into a horn and mechanically connected to a stylus that cut grooves into a wax record, without microphones or amplifiers.

In 1946, Galina Werschenska's London recordings for Nordisk Polyphon were plagued by bad luck, including material scarcity, faults on some takes, and the entire batch being destroyed by fire upon arrival in Denmark.
