This album was inspired by the Kordelin Chapel's historic organ and the cultural work of the Alfred Kordelin Foundation.

Historical Context

Alfred Kordelin was shot and killed by a Russian seaman in 1917, the day after his 49th birthday, during political unrest related to the Russian October Revolution.

Cultural Impact

The Alfred Kordelin Foundation, established in 1918 according to Kordelin's will, was Finland's first major national cultural foundation, supporting science, literature, art, and popular education.

Instruments

Despite having only five stops, the Kordelin Chapel organ offers a rich variety of timbres due to the distinct character of each stop and period-typical couplers.

Performer Biography

Jan Lehtola, a Doctor of Music and organ lecturer, has premiered over 70 works and collaborated regularly with composers, including Naji Hakim, whose works are featured on this disc.

Instruments

The organ in the Kordelin Chapel, built by Kangasala Organ Builders in 1921, is a significant cultural-historical example of Finnish organ building's golden era.
