This album features two live recordings: Rough Music was recorded in 2013 at The Bridgewater Hall, and into the open… was recorded live at the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall in 2015.
Composer Biography
HK Gruber, the composer, was born in Vienna in 1943 and sang with the Vienna Boys' Choir as a child.
Composition History
Rough Music, an early percussion concerto by HK Gruber, was born from a collaboration with his colleague Gerald Fromme, the Principal Timpanist of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.

Colin Currie, the percussion soloist, is acclaimed for his virtuosity and has pioneered new music for percussion, premiering works by numerous composers.
Composer's Artistic Vision
HK Gruber's work into the open… is a tribute to his friend and mentor David Drew, not a memorial, and is considered more of a symphony with solo obbligato percussion.
Performer Biography
Juanjo Mena, one of the conductors on this album, was the Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic for seven seasons and was awarded the Spanish National Music Award in 2017.
