Composer Biography

Leopold Godowsky, born in 1870, was a child prodigy who was almost entirely self-taught and became one of the highest-paid and most sought-after concert artists in the world.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Sergei Rachmaninov, a celebrated composer and pianist, considered Leopold Godowsky to be the only musician of his age who made a lasting and real contribution to the development of piano music.

Compositional Technique

Leopold Godowsky is best known for his 53 Studies on Chopin's Études, which advanced the potential of the left hand and keyboard polyphony to an unprecedented degree.

Performer Biography

Andrey Gugnin, the pianist on this recording, won first prize in the Sydney International Piano Competition in 2016 and has received numerous other accolades.

Recording & Production

The most famous piano solo dedicated to Godowsky, Rachmaninov's Polka de W R, was intentionally omitted from this album to allow space for other dedications, many of which have never been recorded before.
