Composer Biography

A significant and inescapable element in Howells's creative makeup was the loss of his son Michael at the age of nine in 1935.

Composition History

Howells's house was bombed during the Blitz in September 1940, leading him to compose a new work every day for a period, including a set of anthems titled 'In Time of War'.

The 'Salve Regina' is an early work from 1915, written when Howells was a student at the Royal College of Music, influenced by hearing Renaissance church music at Westminster Cathedral.

Howells believed that the buildings where his sacred music would be heard were a fundamental element of its creation, often composing with a specific place in mind.

Howells's significant contribution to Anglican Church music began in 1944 when he won a bet to provide King's College, Cambridge, with a new setting of the Te Deum.
