Composer Biography

Hummel was a child prodigy, giving concerts across northern Europe from the age of ten, and later studied with Muzio Clementi, Haydn, Salieri, and Albrechtsberger.

Composer Biography

Johann Nepomuk Hummel was born in Bratislava in 1778, the son of a Bohemian violinist, and spent his early life in a frontier region where various cultures met and clashed.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Although often categorized as a Biedermeier composer, Hummel's best works show a richness of invention and stylistic variety that look towards the future, anticipating Chopin and displaying Beethoven-like harmonic daring.

Recording & Production

This album includes a second version of the Sonata opus 5 n° 3, where the viola is accompanied by a period fortepiano built by Conrad Graf around 1822/23, instead of a modern piano.

Composer Biography

In 1804, Hummel took over Haydn's former position as director of Prince Esterházy's private cappella in Eisenstadt, a post he held for about seven years.
