Huw Watkins's Four Fables for clarinet and piano trio was a joint commission for the Twentieth anniversary of the Corbridge Chamber Music Festival, where clarinetist Robert Plane and the Gould Piano Trio are Artistic Directors.

Sarah Frances Jenkins, a composer on this album, was previously the teacher of clarinetist Robert Plane during her undergraduate studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
Composer Biography
Mark David Boden's Clarinet Concerto was inspired by his and clarinetist Robert Plane's shared hobby of long-distance running, with its structure loosely resembling the physiology of marathon running.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Sarah Frances Jenkins's piece "Shivelight" is inspired by a word invented by poet Gerard Manley Hopkins, which evokes splintered shafts of light piercing through a forest canopy.

Diana Burrell, one of the featured composers, dislikes 'prettiness' and 'blandness,' preferring 'strong, rough-edged things, brave disrespectful shapes and sounds.'

The Gould Piano Trio, featured on this album, has been at the forefront of the international chamber music scene for a quarter of a century, launched by winning first prize at the International Melbourne Chamber Music Competition.
