The European Wind Soloists, founded in 1993 by Patrick De Ritis, consists of principal wind players from major European orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic and Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala di Milano.

Musical transcription, the practice of transferring musical material across ensembles and idioms, has a long history, from 14th-century keyboard and lute intabulation to the 19th-century market for arrangements.
