Composer Biography
Charles Ives, like John Philip Sousa, was born and raised amid military quicksteps and patriotic songs, with his father leading the Danbury Cornet Band.
Recording & Production
This album was recorded from June 2nd to 6th, 2003, at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall in Alexandria, Virginia.
Interpretation
All works on this album are adaptations for the modern American concert band, its instrumentation, and current instruments.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Ives eventually gave up professional music so his family would not 'starve on his dissonances,' believing that business and music helped each other, as 'life weaves itself whole.'

The United States Marine Band, known as 'The President's Own,' was founded in 1798 and is the oldest professional musical organization in America.

Ives began to create music not just for America, like Sousa's, but music about America and American music as he heard it.
