Interpretation
Kotaro Fukuma's performance of Eugen d'Albert's transcription of the Passacaglia and Fugue was part of a collaboration with Mathieu Ganio, a danseur étoile at the Paris Opera Ballet, who performed a one-man play.
Recording & Production
The program for this album was originally prepared for a concert at the Valletta Baroque Music Festival in Malta in January 2020.
Instruments
The piano used for this recording is a C. Bechstein Model D282, a brand established in 1853 and praised by Debussy.
Performer Biography
Kotaro Fukuma, the pianist on this album, won First Prize and the Chopin Prize at the 15th Cleveland International Piano Competition in 2003 at the age of 20.
Instruments
The founder of C. Bechstein pianos, Carl Bechstein, was influenced by the Pleyel pianos favored by Chopin and aimed to combine transparent and colorful sonority with Germanic precision.
Interpretation
Pianist Kotaro Fukuma's transcription of 'Erbarme Dich, mein Gott' from Bach's St. Matthew Passion was first performed in a concert titled 'Homage to Toru Takemitsu,' a Japanese composer who loved this aria.
