The first recording of a Bach prelude and fugue was made as early as February 1909 by Wilhelm Backhaus, and Ferruccio Busoni also recorded Prelude and Fugue No.1 in C in 1922.

Harriet Cohen, the pianist on this album, was a gifted student at the Royal Academy of Music and taught at the famous Wimpole Street School.

Recording & Production

Columbia Records' project to record the complete Well-Tempered Clavier, featuring Harriet Cohen and Evlyn Howard-Jones, was abandoned after the merger between HMV and Columbia in 1931.

In 1948, Harriet Cohen suffered a right-hand injury but soon after premiered Arnold Bax's new Concerto for Left Hand, which had been written especially for her.
