1/6Recording & Production
This album includes the world premiere recording of the two youthful 'Sonnets' by Janáček, arranged for string quartet by Rolf Gjelsten, the cellist of the New Zealand String Quartet.
Composition History
The Second String Quartet, subtitled 'Intimate Letters', is a musical sublimation of Janáček's love for Kamila Stösslová, a family friend 38 years his junior.
Compositional Technique
Janáček originally conceived his Second String Quartet with a viola d'amore instead of a viola, but abandoned the idea due to the instrument's scarcity and intonational difficulties.
Performer Biography
The New Zealand String Quartet (NZSQ) has been New Zealand's leading chamber ensemble since 1987, performing over 80 concerts annually and releasing numerous acclaimed recordings.
Composition History
Janáček's First String Quartet, subtitled 'Kreutzer Sonata', was inspired by Leo Tolstoy's novella of the same name, which tells a story of failed marriage, passion, and murder.
Composer Biography
Janáček experienced an intense period of creative renewal in his final decade, producing some of his greatest works, including these two string quartets, four operas, and other large-scale pieces.
