Joachim Andersen, a renowned flutist of the late 19th century, was a founding member, principal flutist, and assistant conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

Like many virtuosos of his era, Andersen composed dazzling and appealing pieces for the flute, often dedicating them to other notable flutists who then introduced the works in major European and American cities.
Performer Biography
András Adorján, one of the flutists on this album, won the 'Premier Grand Prix' at the International Flute Competition in Paris in 1971, launching his international career.
Recording & Production
This recording marks the first time several of Andersen's works, including Allegro Militaire and Deuxième Morceau de Concert, have been recorded, and the first time any of his flute compositions have been recorded with orchestral accompaniment.

Andersen spent 11 years in Berlin, performing under famous composers and conductors such as Brahms, Grieg, Strauss, Tchaikovsky, and Hans von Bülow.
Compositional Technique
Andersen frequently used the 'theme and variations' form, composing eight such pieces, three of which are featured on this recording.
