The Atlas Ensemble, an initiative of composer Joël Bons, is a chamber orchestra uniting musicians from various cultures who play their local instruments, creating a previously unheard sound world.
Composition History
Nomaden was commissioned by the Cello Biennale Amsterdam and premiered on October 28, 2016, at the Amsterdam Muziekgebouw.
Performer Biography
Jean-Guihen Queyras, the cellist, is known for his versatile approach to both early music and contemporary music, having premiered works by several composers.
Compositional Technique
The work Nomaden is structured around two types of musical material: "Nomad-music" which is always based on the same basic material but presented differently, and "passages" that are static episodes exploring timbres and serving as bridges.
Composer Biography
Joël Bons, the composer, was exposed to diverse world music from early childhood through his parents' unique record collection, including Mexican mariachi, African percussion, and Indian ragas.
