Mendelssohn used a held bassoon note to seamlessly link the coda of the first movement to the second movement's Andante, a risky choice given the common practice of applause between movements in his era.

Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor features an original cadenza placement, occurring at the end of the development section rather than after the recapitulation.
