Johann Ludwig Krebs, the composer, was a student and close associate of J.S. Bach for nine years at the Thomasschule in Leipzig, serving as a scribe, copyist, and performer.

The six sonatas by Johann Ludwig Krebs were discovered as manuscripts by Felix Friedrich, the former palace organist in Altenburg, during his work on a thematic-systematic catalogue of Krebs's works.
