The Slovak Sinfonietta Žilina, the orchestra on this recording, was founded in 1974 as Slovakia's only 'Mozart-style' orchestra and has achieved international renown, including regular appearances at major Viennese festivals.

Performer Biography

Christian Pollack, the conductor, studied violin, viola, piano, composition, and conducting in Vienna and Munich, and has made numerous recordings of classical Viennese music for Naxos and Marco Polo.

Historical Context

Many of the works on this album, including Die Friedensboten and Soldiers' Songs, were composed by Johann Strauss I in the aftermath of the 1848 revolution in Vienna.
