Karl Goldmark, composer of the Violin Concerto No. 1, narrowly escaped execution during the Revolutions of 1848 when two actors assigned to his firing squad spared him.
Performer Biography
Nathan Milstein, the violinist, met Vladimir Horowitz, a famous pianist, in 1921 and they later toured together as "children of the revolution" throughout the Soviet Union.
Instruments
Nathan Milstein, the violinist, acquired the 1716 'Goldman' Stradivari in 1945 and renamed it the 'Maria Teresa' in honor of his daughter Maria and his wife Therese.
Composition History
Johannes Brahms's Violin Concerto was composed in collaboration with the distinguished violinist Joseph Joachim, who also provided the cadenza for the work.
Performer Biography
Nathan Milstein, the violinist on this album, began violin studies with Pyotr Stolyarsky, who also taught the renowned violinist David Oistrakh.
Critical Reception
Brahms's Violin Concerto was initially controversial, with some critics like Sarasate refusing to play it, calling it a "Concerto against the Violin."
Composition History
Karl Goldmark's opera The Queen of Sheba premiered in 1875 and was so successful that he was recalled 40 times by the audience.
