Ashley Bathgate, the cellist on this album, joined the Bang on a Can All-Stars shortly after moving to New York City, which she states changed everything for her.

The album title "Stories for Ocean Shells" was suggested by cellist Ashley Bathgate, inspired by the composer's story of the name's origin and her own childhood memory of a conch shell.

Composer Kate Moore and cellist Ashley Bathgate first met in 2009 when Kate Moore landed in New York to rehearse her piece "Ridgeway" with Bang on a Can.
