Conductor José Serebrier, born in Uruguay of Russian and Polish parents, has received thirty-seven GRAMMY nominations and won numerous awards as both a conductor and composer.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Khachaturian explained that his Concerto-Rhapsodies are 'both' a concerto, which is 'music with chandeliers burning bright,' and a rhapsody, which is 'music with chandeliers dimmed.'
Critical Reception
Despite his high standing in Soviet music, Khachaturian was denounced by the Communist Party in 1948 for 'anti-popular trends' and 'bourgeois formalism,' criticisms he publicly accepted.
Composer Biography
Aram Khachaturian, an Armenian composer, did not receive formal musical training until later in life because his bookbinder father was too poor to pay for it.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Khachaturian's passion for the interval of the second, which some critics found discordant, stemmed from the folk instruments tar, kamancha, and tambourine he heard as a child.
Performer Biography
Violinist Nicolas Koeckert was the first German to become a laureate at the International Tchaikovsky Violin Competition in Moscow in 2002.
Composition History
Khachaturian's Violin Concerto and the ballet Gayaneh both won the prestigious Stalin Prize, which is now known as the State Prize.
