Giselher Klebe's Poèma drammatico, Op. 130, is a homage to Verdi, who had been a guiding influence on Klebe's music since 1950.

The pianists Silke-Thora Matthies and Christian Köhn formed a piano duo in 1986, achieving international acclaim, prizes, and numerous first performances of contemporary music.

Composer Biography

Giselher Klebe, the composer, studied violin, viola, music history, and composition at the Berlin Conservatory, and later with Josef Rufer and Boris Blacher.

Compositional Technique

The Poèma drammatico, Op. 130, includes musical quotations from Verdi's operas Otello, Simone Boccanegra, Macbeth, and Il trovatore, integrated into Klebe's own musical language.

In his Soggetto cavato works and Widmungen, Giselher Klebe uses the letters of dedicatees' names as a motivic basis for the music.

Klebe's Soggetto cavato pieces use a Renaissance compositional technique where a polyphonic subject is derived from the vowels of a name, using Guidonian syllables.

Track 1, Poèma drammatico, was recorded on April 16th, 2002, at Konzerthaus Freiburg, while the other tracks were recorded on September 23rd, 2003, at Rudolf-Oetker-Halle Bielefeld.
