Composer Biography

Erich Wolfgang Korngold, born in Moravia, displayed astonishing talent as a child, leading Gustav Mahler to send him to study with Alexander Zemlinsky.

Historical Context

The album features three works for violin and orchestra composed in the three years following the end of World War II by two composers with very different fates.

Performer Biography

Vadim Gluzman, the violinist on this recording, plays the extraordinary 1690 ex-Leopold Auer Stradivarius, on extended loan from the Stradivari Society of Chicago.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Balys Dvarionas, a Lithuanian composer, evoked the intonations of Lithuanian folk music in his lyrical and tonal compositions, which was acceptable to Soviet authorities.

Composition History

Balys Dvarionas composed his Violin Concerto in B minor, reputed to be the first ever written by a Lithuanian composer, in two months after being inspired by a storm at the seaside resort of Palanga.

Performer Biography

Neeme Järvi, the conductor, is the head of a musical dynasty and has amassed a distinguished discography of more than 440 discs.

Composition History

Korngold's Violin Concerto was originally intended for the great violinist Bronisław Huberman, but he was unable to commit to a premiere date, so Jascha Heifetz premiered it instead.
