Kuhlau's Piano Quartet No. 3 was commissioned in 1828 by a Russian merchant, J.M. Witkowsky, as a gift for his daughter.

Cultural Impact

Otto Malling's late-Romantic, programmatic organ music, for which he was best known at his death, paradoxically led to his obscurity as church music reformers sought to remove such styles from Danish churches.

Kuhlau, despite losing his right eye in an accident as a boy, pursued a career as a musician, becoming active as a pianist and publishing his first compositions as a teenager.
