Michel-Richard de Lalande, the composer, began his musical training as a chorister at the Parisian church of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois, where he was a fellow pupil of Marin Marais, a French viol player and composer.

Lalande became Louis XIV's favorite musician, accumulating principal offices of the court music, including sous-maître of the Chapelle and surintendant of the Musique de la chambre.
Composition History
Lalande's Grands Motets were developed to adapt to the characteristics of the definitive chapel of the Château de Versailles, whose construction was overseen by Louis XIV.
Compositional Technique
Lalande's later motets, from the 1700s, show significant explorations in vocal parts, choruses, and instrumental accompaniment, moving away from the highly contrapuntal aesthetic of his predecessors.

This album was recorded live in the Chapelle royale of the Château de Versailles on July 5 and 7, 2017.
