1/6Composer Biography
Rued Langgaard, the composer, was considered an outsider in Danish music due to his Late Romantic and Symbolist background, which conflicted with the prevailing anti-Romantic view of art in Denmark during the 1920s and 1930s.
Interpretation
The performers, Nightingale String Quartet, had to make their own interpretive decisions regarding dynamics and even question unusual notes in chords, as there was no established performance tradition for many of Langgaard's lesser-known string quartets.
Compositional Technique
Langgaard's string quartets exhibit a wide stylistic range, incorporating Classicist, Romantic, Neoclassical, Expressionist, and Modernist features, spanning musical idioms from Mozart to Bartók.
Composition History
Rued Langgaard's string quartets were primarily composed within an 11-year period, from 1914 to 1925, during his productive youthful years when he also created major symphonies and an opera.
Performer Biography
The Nightingale String Quartet, formed in 2007, has received numerous awards, including the Danish Radio P2 talent prize and Gramophone's 'Young Artist of the Year Award' for their work on Rued Langgaard's string quartets.
Critical Reception
Langgaard's works, including his string quartets, were largely ignored by the Danish musical establishment, which preferred the innovations of Carl Nielsen, leading to his works disappearing from awareness.
