The Schwanthaler Trompetenconsort won the H.I.F. Biber Award in 2011 at the International H.I.F. Biber Competition.
Historical Context
Before the invention of valves in the 19th century, trumpets were primarily natural instruments, with their range limited to the harmonic series.
Interpretation
In one anonymous fanfare, the recording intentionally does not correct natural tones, particularly f2, to demonstrate how modern listening habits differ from those of past centuries.
Recording & Production
This recording uses replicas of historic trumpets and incorporates current knowledge of historical performance practice to recreate the composers' intended sound.
Compositional Technique
Mastering the high 'Clarin range' on natural trumpets, which starts on the note c'', required years of practice and excellent physical condition.
