Compositional Technique
In The Raven, the final poem uses various instrument combinations, with the timpani playing a three-note motive to imitate the bird cawing, 'Nevermore.'

Some of Felix Slatkin's (Leonard Slatkin's father) arrangements for Liberty Records were reconstructed by his wife, Cindy McTee (a composer), and others were preserved by his collaborator Amerigo Marino, as the physical music was mostly destroyed.
Composer Biography
Leonard Slatkin, the conductor on this album, has been active as a composer almost from the time he was born, starting with childhood improvisations.
Composition History
Leonard Slatkin composed Kinah in 2015 as a tribute to his parents, Felix Slatkin (a violinist) and Eleanor Slatkin (a cellist), after his father's unexpected death prevented their public performance of the Brahms Double Concerto.
Composition History
Leonard Slatkin's piece, The Raven, was sketched after he learned that the character actor Vincent Price was a St. Louis native, and Price agreed to narrate its 1971 world premiere.
Compositional Technique
Kinah, a tribute to Leonard Slatkin's parents, incorporates notes from the melody of the slow movement of the Brahms Double Concerto, which his parents were to perform.
