Composer Biography
Leoš Janáček's father and grandfather were teachers in Brno who preserved the use of the Czech language despite imperial efforts to suppress it.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Janáček's fondness for his native Czech language led him to conduct field research, traveling to remote areas of Moravia with ethnomusicologist František Bartoš to study folksongs.
Performer Biography
Pianist Slávka Pěchočová's doctoral dissertation at Prague's Academy of Performing Arts focused on the complete piano works of Leoš Janáček.
Composer Biography
As a young student, Janáček was a boarding student and choirboy at the Augustinian Monastery School, where choirmaster Pavel Křížkovský instilled in him a taste for Moravian folk repertoire.
Recording & Production
This album was recorded in Prague at Martinů Concert Hall in September, October, and November of 2009.
