Sébastien de Brossard (1655-1730) was the son of an impoverished gentleman glassmaker who became a priest and a prolific collector of musical works.

Sébastien de Brossard, a cleric at Notre-Dame de Paris, was sent by Louis XIV to Strasbourg to restore Catholic worship at the cathedral and had to establish choirs and compose music without prior experience.

Compositional Technique

Pierre Bouteiller's Missa pro Defunctis is scored 'in the French manner' for five voices, creating varied textures and dialogues, and features refined contrapuntal writing with fugues and canons.

Interpretation

This recording interpolates sections of plainchant, sung by Christophe Gautier, to recreate the historical performance practice of funeral ceremonies, marking the procession and Mass.

Composition History

The only known works by Pierre Bouteiller (c. 1655-c. 1717) that survive today are the 13 motets and the Requiem Mass featured on this recording, which were preserved thanks to Sébastien de Brossard.
