Bernhard Lewkovitch, the composer on this album, has attracted attention at several I.s.c.M. festivals across Europe and won international competitions in Montsenat (1982) and Munich (1983).

Bernhard Lewkovitch, the founder of Schola Cantorum, studied composition, organ playing, and music theory and history at the Royal Danish Academy of Music.
Compositional Technique
The piece "Improperia (Long Friday)" alternates between recited and sung passages, combining strictly serial sections with collective freely improvised elements.
Performer Biography
Schola Cantorum is a choir of 12-16 professional singers from Copenhagen, representing an enlargement of Schola Gregoriana, which was founded in 1953 and specialized in plainsong.
