Christian Lindberg has inspired over sixty composers, including Xenakis, Takemitsu, Schnittke, Nyman, Jan Sandström, and Pärt, to write works specifically for him.

Christian Lindberg, the trombonist, began composing at age 39 after Jan Sandström, another composer on this album, suggested he write his own trombone concerto.

Composition History

Jan Sandström's Cantos de la Mancha was inspired by an etching of Don Quixote by Christian Lindberg's mother, which Sandström saw at Lindberg's home.

Performer Biography

Christian Lindberg, the trombonist on this album, was voted one of the greatest brass players of the 20th century, and was the only trombonist listed alongside legends like Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis.

Composer Biography

Axel Jørgensen, whose Suite for Trombone and Orchestra is featured, was an amateur composer and an orchestral violist at the Copenhagen Opera.

Performer Biography

Christian Lindberg began playing the trombone at age 17 and, within three years, left the Royal Stockholm Opera Orchestra to become the first professional trombone soloist in history.
