Magnus Lindberg (b. 1958) studied with Paavo Heininen at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and was a core member of the Korvat Auki! (Ears Open!) association, alongside composers Kaija Saariaho and Esa-Pekka Salonen.
Compositional Technique
Lindberg often bases his works on repeated harmonic structures, similar to a chaconne, but the detailed complexity and layered action in his music prevent it from sounding mechanical.
Composer's Artistic Vision
In the early 1980s, Lindberg embraced a Modernist aesthetic, stating, "Only the extreme is interesting" and "I am a child of the times, and I like fast and complicated things."
Composer's Artistic Vision
Lindberg considers the orchestra his primary instrument, demonstrating complete command of its expressive palette, with conductors commending his scores for their functionality.
Compositional Technique
Lindberg's work Kraft (1983-1985) combined "hyper-complex with the primitive," drawing inspiration from punk rock and utilizing a computer program to manage its intricate rhythms and harmonies.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Lindberg's compositional style has evolved over time, but he has always retained a personal and recognizable idiom, stating that "every work contains something completely new but also something from the previous work."
Composition History
Lindberg's international breakthrough in the 1990s was achieved through his orchestral works, leading to commissions from many distinguished orchestras.
